Obstetric fistula is one of the most devastating and least discussed childbirth injuries. More than 500,000 women worldwide are affected, even though the condition is almost entirely preventable and treatable.

It occurs when prolonged, obstructed labour is left unmanaged, causing a hole to form between the birth canal and the bladder and/or rectum. The result is continuous incontinence, infections, chronic health complications, and often deep social isolation.

Those most affected are typically young women living in poverty, often in remote areas with little or no access to skilled birth attendants or emergency obstetric care.

–  With access to a trained midwife, obstetric fistula can be prevented.
–  With access to skilled surgical care, it can be repaired.

Ending obstetric fistula is possible. But it requires greater investment in midwives, stronger maternal healthcare systems, and global attention to a condition that should no longer exist.
